"I already started imagining one." Evelyn was speechless. But the real surprise came the next morning. Daniel arrived at work and found an envelope waiting on his desk. Inside was a resignation letter from Evelyn.

He rushed to her office. "What is this?" Evelyn looked exhausted. "The board found out about us." Daniel's face fell.

"They want you to end this. They threatened to remove me as CEO if I don't." Daniel stared at her. "Then don't choose me." Evelyn looked confused.

"What?" "Choose yourself," Daniel said. "I don't want to become another person you have to sacrifice something for." She stood silently. Daniel turned toward the door.

Then Evelyn stopped him. "You still don't understand." She opened a folder on her desk. Inside were years of financial reports. "I discovered someone on the board has been secretly moving company money through a shell company."

Daniel froze. "And they're trying to use our relationship as an excuse to force me out before I can expose them." Suddenly, everything made sense. The pressure, the rumors, the resignation. Daniel stepped closer.

"Then we fight." Evelyn smiled through her tears. Together, they uncovered the evidence and presented it to the board. The corrupt executive was removed, and Evelyn kept her position. Weeks later, Evelyn stood in Daniel's kitchen while Lily helped decorate a small cake.

Daniel walked in and found Evelyn holding a crooked frosting-covered heart. "Lily says this is for me." Daniel smiled. "Looks like she knows something we don't." Lily rolled her eyes.

"I knew months ago." Evelyn laughed. Daniel looked at her. There was no boardroom, no wealth, no age difference, just three people standing in a kitchen slowly becoming a family.

Evelyn reached for his hand. "You know," she whispered, "I was terrified you'd think I was too old." Daniel squeezed her fingers. "I was terrified you'd think my life was too complicated."

She smiled. "Maybe complicated isn't the same thing as impossible." And Daniel knew then that his answer had never really been about age. It had been about seeing someone clearly and choosing them anyway.
