Two more miles, August. Same as every other day. Ma'am, I don't mean any harm, but your mother's in bad shape and needs help. There's nothing out here but cold rain and dying. We're managing just fine on our own.
You can go on your way, mister. We don't want your charity or anything else from you. Ma'am, she's collapsing. Let me help before she hits the ground. I said stay back.
I swear to God Almighty, I'll put a bullet through you. Don't you take another step. Stay back. I believe you would, ma'am. You've got the look of someone who's already had to shoot someone before or come real close to it.
How do I know that you're not like the others? My name's Jonah Callaway. My ranch is 2 mi south of here. I lost my wife and son 3 years back. I know what it looks like when someone's dying.
Move. We're losing her and we don't have time to stand here debating. Cover her with this. Keep her warm. Hold on tight.
I'm going to push hard. Please, God, let us make it in time. Please save her. Yeah. Move it.
Go, go, go. She's not breathing. Just a little further. Don't just stand there in the rain, Emma. Get yourself inside right now.
Your mother needs you. Get those wet clothes off her. Every stitch. All of them. Hypothermia will kill her before the consumption does if we don't get her warm.
I can hear it in her breathing. Consumption deep in the lungs. How long has she been sick like this? 6 Months diagnosis. 4 Months to live.
That was 5 months ago. I'm sorry. That's a hard road for both of you. We'll be gone in the morning soon as she can travel. She won't travel for weeks.
I'll make coffee and soup. You need food. Why help us? We could be anyone. Why?
3 Years ago, I sat there watching my wife die in childbirth. Baby, too. A boy. Both gone by morning. I can't save your mother, but I can give you a warm place.
That's what I got. These were my wife Ruth's. She was about your size. There's a screen for privacy. Thank you for stopping, for not leaving us to die.
Anyone decent would have stopped. Nothing special about it. When's the last time you slept? Really slept more than an hour. Need to watch her and watch for for people following us.
Someone chasing you. That's not your business. We'll be gone in the morning. You won't be involved. Fair enough.
But while you're under my roof, you're safe. I've got two ranch hands. Good men, armed. Enough rifles to hold off anyone who needs holding off. So sleep if you can.
Why would you do that for strangers? What do you get out of it? Nothing. I get nothing. I do it because it's the right thing.
Those reasons enough. More than enough. Shh. Found him on the road yesterday. Mother's dying.
Consumption. Daughter's scared. Someone's chasing them. They're staying till the mother can travel. Maybe longer.
Someone chasing them. That going to be our problem, boss. Watch the approaches. Anyone unfamiliar gets reported. Armed watch tonight.
