"Because I want you to be careful."
Maya's expression changed.
"What's going on?"
David turned his laptop toward her.
The group chat was visible.
Maya read the messages.
Her stomach tightened when she reached the word rope.
"They're planning something."
"Yes."
"Then we should report them."
"We will. But I want to make sure the university and the authorities have the original evidence."
Maya stared at the screen.
"What if they actually try something?"
David met her eyes.
"Then they will have to answer for it."
Friday evening arrived beneath a cold autumn sky.
Miller's Field was a secluded clearing beyond the university's athletic facilities. Students sometimes gathered there for bonfires, parties, and weekend celebrations.
Britney had invited Maya personally.
She had even sent a friendly message suggesting they should start over.
Maya knew it was a trap.
But David had already contacted the local authorities and arranged for the threats to be documented. He had also positioned himself near the field with Ellie, who agreed to remain close to Maya throughout the evening.
"Stay together," David instructed them before they left.
Maya nodded.
Ellie adjusted her jacket.
"I've never been part of anything this terrifying."
David gave her a faint smile.
"Then let's make sure it's also the last time."
He checked his phone.
"Perimeter is ready."
Maya looked at him.
"Please don't do anything reckless."
"I won't."
He placed a hand on her shoulder.
"And remember, you have every right to leave. You don't owe those people an opportunity to hurt you."
Maya nodded.
Then she and Ellie headed toward the clearing.
The bonfire was already burning when they arrived.
Music played through portable speakers. Students stood in small groups holding drinks and laughing beneath the trees. Orange flames illuminated the surrounding darkness.
Britney spotted Maya immediately.
"Well, look who came!"
Several students turned.
Maya kept her shoulders straight.
"You invited me."
Britney smiled.
"Of course. We wanted to make you feel welcome."
Tyler stood behind her.
He was holding a thick length of rope.
Ellie noticed it immediately.
Her fingers tightened around Maya's arm.
"Something's wrong."
Maya nodded.
"I know."
Tyler stepped forward.
"Come on, Atlanta. We have a little tradition for new people."
"What tradition?"
"An initiation."
Maya shook her head.
"I'm not interested."
Britney laughed.
"Don't be boring. It's harmless."
Maya looked around.
Several students were already holding their phones.
Some appeared uncomfortable.
Others were clearly waiting for something entertaining to happen.
"Ellie, let's go."
They turned toward the trail.
Tyler stepped in front of them.
"Not so fast."
Maya stopped.
"Move."
Tyler's smile disappeared.
"You've been making us look bad all semester."
"I haven't done anything to you."
"That's the problem. You think you can walk around here ignoring everybody."
Ellie raised her phone.
"Tyler, get out of the way."
He turned toward her.
"Nobody asked you."
Then he gestured to his friends.
Two young men moved toward Maya.
She stepped backward.
"Don't touch me."
One grabbed her backpack strap.
The other seized her arm.
Maya struggled to pull away, but they dragged her toward an enormous oak tree at the edge of the clearing.
Ellie screamed.
"LET HER GO!"
Britney stood watching.
"Maybe now she'll learn."
Maya tried to pull her arm free.
"You're making a serious mistake!"
Tyler laughed.
"You're the one who should be worried."
The boys forced Maya against the tree.
One held her shoulders while the other wrapped the rope around her wrists and the trunk.
The knot tightened.
Maya pulled against it.
"Stop! Let me go!"
Her voice carried through the clearing.
Several students lowered their phones.
This was no longer an ordinary college prank.
Tyler stepped closer.
"Now you're going to listen."
Maya turned her face away.
"Get away from me."
He grabbed her chin.
"Look at me."
She jerked her head aside.
"Don't touch me!"
Tyler ignored her refusal.
He pulled her face toward his and forcibly pressed his mouth against hers.
Maya struggled against the rope, turning her head away and trying to push him back with her shoulder. The unwanted contact lasted only a moment, but it was enough to leave her shaken and humiliated.
When Tyler finally stepped back, he wore a smug expression.
"Maybe now you'll remember me."
Maya's eyes filled with tears.
Not because she had accepted what happened.
Because she was furious that he believed he could do it and get away with it.
Ellie was crying now.
"Somebody help her!"
A few students began shouting at Tyler.
One young woman lowered her phone and stepped forward.
"That's enough! Let her go!"
Britney turned sharply.
"Stay out of it!"
But the atmosphere had changed.
People were no longer laughing.
And then a voice came from the darkness.
"STEP AWAY FROM MY DAUGHTER."
The entire clearing went silent.
David Carter emerged from between the trees.
He wore a dark jacket, jeans, and a small recording device clipped beneath his collar. His expression was controlled, but his eyes were fixed on Tyler.
Nobody had heard him approach.
Tyler stepped backward.
"Who the hell are you?"
David didn't answer immediately.
He looked at Maya.
"Sweetheart, are you hurt?"
Maya's voice trembled.
"Dad..."
David nodded.
"I'm here."
Then he turned toward the students.
"Untie her. Right now."
One of the boys hesitated.
David took a step forward.
"Now."
The student quickly released the rope.
Maya's wrists were red from the pressure.
David moved beside her and gently supported her as she stepped away from the tree.
He didn't ask her to explain.
He didn't demand that she stop crying.
He simply placed his jacket around her shoulders.
Then he looked at Tyler.
"Did you force yourself on her?"
Tyler swallowed.
"It was just a joke."
David's expression hardened.
"She told you no."
Tyler looked toward Britney.
She immediately tried to intervene.
"Her father has no right to come here and threaten us!"
David turned toward her.
"I'm not threatening anyone."
He reached into his jacket and removed his phone.
"I'm preserving evidence."
He tapped the screen.
A recording began playing through the phone's speaker.
Tyler's voice was unmistakable.
"Bring rope. She needs to learn that she can't disrespect people here."
Then came the video from the clearing.
The recording showed the boys restraining Maya, tying her to the tree, and Tyler forcing the unwanted kiss despite her resistance.
Britney's face went pale.
"Turn that off!"
David didn't move.
"Why? You wanted everyone to watch."
He looked around at the students.
"Now everyone gets to see what actually happened."
Tyler tried to approach him.
David raised one hand.
"Don't."
The command was quiet but unmistakable.
A moment later, blue and red lights flashed between the trees.
Two county deputies entered the clearing.
David had contacted them before the gathering, providing the threatening messages and the location of the planned confrontation.
"Officer, I'm David Carter. My daughter was assaulted and unlawfully restrained. We have video evidence and witnesses."
One deputy immediately approached Maya.
"Are you okay? Do you need medical attention?"
Maya nodded weakly.
"Yes. My wrists hurt."
The deputy called for medical assistance.
The second officer separated Tyler, Britney, and the other students.
Tyler began protesting.
"You can't arrest me! This is a private party!"
The deputy looked at him.
"You're being detained while we investigate an assault and an allegation of nonconsensual sexual contact."
Britney stepped forward.
"My father is on the university board!"
David looked at her.
"Then perhaps he'll finally learn what his daughter has been doing."
For the first time that evening, Britney had nothing to say.
The following morning, Brook Haven University was facing a crisis.
Videos from the bonfire had spread across social media overnight. The footage showed Maya tied to the oak tree, Tyler forcing the kiss, and the moment David arrived.
Students who had previously dismissed Maya's complaints were now demanding answers.
The university administration called an emergency meeting.
Dean Harlon arrived first.
He looked exhausted.
David entered the conference room with Maya and Ellie.
Across the table sat the university president, the head of student affairs, two board representatives, and several administrators.
Harlon began.
"Mr. Carter, we understand that emotions are high, but we need to approach this carefully."
David looked at him.
"Carefully?"
"Yes. We must consider the reputations of everyone involved."
David placed a folder on the table.
"My daughter's safety should have been your first concern. Her reputation should never have been the priority over investigating the harassment she reported."
The president opened the folder.
Inside were photographs of the vandalized locker, screenshots of racist messages, the threatening group chat, witness statements, and recordings from the bonfire.
Maya finally spoke.
"I reported the harassment weeks ago. I showed Dean Harlon the evidence. I asked for help, and I was told it was probably a misunderstanding."
The room fell silent.
She continued.
"Then they tied me to a tree. One of them forced a kiss on me while I was restrained. I said no. I tried to move away. Nobody should have to experience that just because they attend the same university as someone who thinks he's powerful."
