“HE HIT ME!”

For a second, Daniel’s mind simply refused to process what he had seen.

Then he looked toward the garage.

A small black security camera sat beneath the roofline.

His camera.

It pointed directly at the driveway.

Daniel almost laughed from relief.

Not because any of this was funny.

Because reality had a witness.

“You know there’s a camera,” he said.

Eleanor’s expression changed.

Only for a second.

But he saw it.

Then she recovered.

“That doesn’t prove anything.”

“It records the driveway.”

“I don’t care.”

“You probably should.”

Eleanor pulled out her phone.

“I already called the police.”

Daniel nodded.

“Okay.”

“You’re going to jail.”

“I didn’t do anything.”

She raised her voice again.

“You assaulted an elderly woman!”

Daniel wanted to answer.

Instead, he stepped backward and deliberately raised both hands where everyone could see them.

Then he waited.

Chapter 2: Eighteen Seconds

Two police cruisers entered Bellhaven less than ten minutes later.

Officer Sarah Morgan stepped from the first vehicle, followed by her partner, an older officer named Paul Bennett. Eleanor ran toward them before either officer had finished closing a car door.

“He attacked me.”

Then, as though the details needed more force:

“He hit me.”

Officer Morgan looked at the red mark on Eleanor’s cheek.

Then at Daniel.

Daniel remained beside the pickup.

Hands visible.

Voice controlled.

“There’s a security camera above my garage.”

Morgan looked up.

“Does it cover where this happened?”

“Yes.”

“Can you access the footage?”

“Yes.”

Eleanor immediately interrupted.

“You don’t need to watch anything. I know what happened.”

Morgan turned toward her.

“Mrs. Whitmore, we need to establish that ourselves.”

“But I’m telling you he hit me.”

“Were there witnesses?”

“People saw what happened afterward.”

Morgan looked toward Daniel.

“You’re saying you never touched her?”

“She grabbed my arm. I pulled free. That’s it.”

Morgan nodded.

“Show me the recording.”

Daniel led them toward the garage.

Behind him, Eleanor became completely still.

The footage loaded on a monitor in Daniel’s small workshop.

Morgan watched once.

Then replayed it.

Daniel was there.

Eleanor crossed the driveway.

They argued.

She grabbed his arm.

Daniel pulled away.

Then came the moment.

Eleanor looked toward the street.

Raised her hand.

Slapped herself.

Dropped her glasses.

And screamed.

The entire sequence took eighteen seconds.

Officer Bennett leaned toward the screen.

Morgan did not move.

Finally she said:

“Play it again.”

Daniel did.

Same result.

No ambiguity.

No missing angle.

No contact from Daniel except pulling his own arm away.

Morgan looked through the garage door toward Eleanor.
