APPOINTMENT OF ADRIAN MICHAEL COLE
CHIEF OF POLICE
A formal photograph sat beneath the name.
Vaughn turned the page outward.
The lobby seemed to lose air.
Kevin Miles went pale. Ryan Walsh took one small step backward.
Grady stared at the document but said nothing. His face moved through confusion, disbelief, calculation, and finally fear.
Vaughn asked, very quietly, “Sergeant Grady, why is the man taking command of this department in handcuffs?”
No one answered.
Adrian watched Grady carefully. The transformation interested him more than he wished it did.
Grady looked first at the appointment page. Then at the badge.
Then at Adrian. “This was never communicated.”
Vaughn stared. “The appointment was announced by the mayor on Friday.”
“I wasn’t working Friday.”
“That does not answer my question.”
“He refused identification.” Grady’s voice sounded less certain now.
Adrian turned his head. “No.”
Grady looked at him. Adrian continued.
“I gave my name, stated the agency, told you credentials were inside the folder, offered state certification, offered city appointment verification, and asked you to call command.”
“You refused to give me the folder.”
“That is not the same thing.”
Vaughn looked toward Nicole. “Officer Reyes?”
She hesitated because Grady was still her sergeant. Vaughn noticed the hesitation.
“Officer?”
Nicole straightened. “Chief Cole is correct, sir.”
Grady’s eyes hardened. Nicole continued anyway.
“He gave his name. He said credentials were inside the folder. He asked Sergeant Grady to verify with command.”
“Did he threaten anyone?”
“No.”
“Resist physically?”
“No.”
“Attempt to leave?”
“No.”
“Anyone disagree?”
Ryan Walsh shook his head first. “No, Commissioner.”
Kevin followed. “No, sir.”
Vaughn looked toward Adrian. “Chief Cole, would you like those cuffs removed?”
Adrian surprised everyone. “Not yet.”
Vaughn blinked. Grady stared.
Adrian shifted slightly against the counter. “I want the scene preserved exactly as it is until someone not involved confirms body-camera status, lobby-camera retention, counter audio, witness names, the incident number, and the location of every document.”
Vaughn understood instantly. His expression changed from outrage to focus.
He turned toward Nicole. “Camera active?”
“Yes.”
“Miles?”
“Yes, Commissioner.”
“Walsh?”
“Yes.”
Vaughn looked at Grady’s camera. No light.
