Did you receive an upgrade?
Simone had spent years deciding when correcting strangers was worth the cost.
Motherhood had not made that calculation easier.
It had made it heavier.
Because now Lila was sleeping in her arms while another person quietly demonstrated the world her daughter would inherit.
The turbulence stopped.
Preston ordered another champagne.
Melissa brought it.
She noticed Simone’s expression and asked privately if she needed anything.
“No, thank you.”
Melissa lowered her voice.
“I can see whether another seat is available.”
Simone almost said yes.
Then looked around.
First class was full.
Moving her likely meant going backward.
She shook her head.
“I’m okay.”
Melissa hesitated.
Then nodded.
Twenty minutes later, Lila woke hungry.
Simone prepared a bottle beneath a light nursing cover.
Preston noticed.
He looked away with exaggerated discomfort.
“This is unbelievable.”
Simone ignored him.
“I mean, there are lounges for this.”
She continued feeding Lila.
“Ma’am?”
Simone finally looked at him.
“This is an airplane.”
“I’m aware.”
“She’s eating.”
“I can see that.”
“Then we’re caught up.”
The passenger behind Simone coughed to hide a laugh.
Preston heard.
His face reddened slightly.
That was the moment the atmosphere changed.
Until then, he had acted as though Simone was an inconvenience.
Now she had embarrassed him.
Not intentionally.
That did not matter.
Some people experienced contradiction as humiliation.
Preston became quieter.
Sharper.
Every movement from Simone seemed suddenly offensive to him.
When Lila finished eating, Simone placed the empty bottle inside the diaper bag.
Preston shifted toward the aisle.
His elbow struck his champagne glass.
Simone saw the glass move.
So did Melissa, who was standing three rows ahead.
Preston caught it before it fell.
For a second, nothing spilled.
Then he turned toward Simone.
“You know, some people confuse being able to buy something with belonging somewhere.”
Simone stared.
“What?”
He gestured with the glass.
“This cabin.”
The motion sent wine over the rim.
Directly toward Lila.
The champagne splashed across the baby’s blanket and Simone’s blouse.
Whether Preston intended the spill became a matter people argued about later.
Simone never claimed he deliberately poured it.
The video did not prove that.
What it proved was what happened next.
He looked at the wet baby.
Then laughed.
No immediate apology.
No napkin.
No concern.
Just amusement.
That was when Simone said, “Apologize.”
And Preston answered that he did not apologize to people who should not be sitting there.
Now, with Lila wrapped in a fresh airline blanket, Simone held her phone and looked toward the contact list.
Preston watched.
“Who are you calling?”
Simone did not answer.
Monica Price picked up after two rings.
“Please tell me you’re calling to cancel tomorrow and sleep.”
Simone looked toward Preston.
“Change of agenda.”
