Her voice softened. This is not payment for saving Harper. Nothing I own could pay that debt. This is me recognizing value I should have known how to see before yesterday. You are honest.

You are skilled. You know these roads, these vehicles, these people. You acted when everyone else would have calculated risk. I want that kind of man maintaining the vehicles that carry my family and my staff. Caleb looked out the dirty window.

The school bus was pulling up near the corner. Leo hopped down, backpack bouncing, waving at the driver. He ran toward the garage, unaware that his father's world had shifted beneath his feet. Caleb's eyes burned. He tried to speak and failed.

Evelyn followed his gaze. He deserves to keep his home. Caleb swallowed. "Don't say it like that." "Why?"

"Because I might believe you." Leo burst into the office a moment later. Dad, we had art today and I drew a dragon with a tow truck and he stopped when he saw Evelyn. "Is she a customer?" Caleb laughed softly, wiping at his eyes before Leo could notice.

"Something like that." Evelyn crouched to Leo's level, not quite graceful in her expensive suit, but trying. "You must be Leo." Leo narrowed his eyes. "Are you buying our shop?"

Caleb stiffened, but Evelyn answered carefully. "No. Your dad is keeping it." Leo looked at Caleb. "Really?"

Caleb nodded and the boy ran into his arms so hard it nearly knocked the breath from him. Caleb held him tightly, one hand pressed to the back of his son's head. The shop lights hummed overhead. Rainwater dripped somewhere near the bay door. Evelyn stood quietly beside the desk watching a kind of wealth she had almost forgotten existed.

One week later, Mitchell & Son Auto was full of people. Not investors, not reporters, people. Mechanics from nearby shops came by to help install a new lift. A retired sign painter offered to restore the old neon. A local electrician fixed the wiring for half his usual rate after hearing what happened in the canyon.

Evelyn sent no press release. Harper asked her not to. Instead, she came by with her mother on a Saturday morning wearing jeans, sneakers, and Caleb's old flannel. Now washed but still stained faintly near the sleeve. ""You know I can buy you a new jacket."" Evelyn said as Harper climbed out of the SUV. Harper pulled it tighter around herself. ""I don't want a new one."" Evelyn did not argue.

That was new for her. Harper walked into the garage where Leo was sweeping the same patch of floor with extreme seriousness. "Hi." She said. Leo looked up. ""Are you the girl my dad saved?"" Caleb nearly dropped a wrench.
