I think I'd wish I had paid attention to the right thing sooner. Sophie considered that. Then nodded. That's a good one. Another cracker disappeared.

Then Sophie turned toward her father. I know mine. Jake smiled. What's yours? Sophie looked directly at him.

I wish you weren't tired all the time, Daddy. The words landed like a punch. No warning, no preparation, just truth, pure and uncomplicated. Jake stopped breathing. Across the table, Laura's expression changed instantly.

She saw it, too. Saw exactly what those eight words meant. Sophie wasn't accusing him. Wasn't criticizing him. She was simply describing reality.

The reality she saw every day. Her father exhausted. Her father working. Her father struggling to stay awake during movie nights. Her father promising rest tomorrow.

Always tomorrow. Jake turned toward the sink. He needed something to do with his hands. Something to keep himself together. Behind him, Sophie continued eating crackers completely unaware of the devastation she had just caused.

Children often spoke the truth adults spent years avoiding. Jake gripped the edge of the counter and stared into the darkness outside the window. For the first time all night, the papers in the folder didn't matter. The promotion didn't matter. The money didn't matter.

Because sitting at his kitchen table was proof of what had actually been stolen from him. Not opportunities. Not titles. Time. And unlike money, time never came back.

Behind him, Laura sat silently watching. Understanding. Maybe for the first time, fully understanding the cost hidden behind every spreadsheet and performance metric she had reviewed that afternoon. And as the rain continued falling outside, and the little girl slowly drifted toward sleep in her chair, neither Jake nor Laura realized that this quiet moment in a small kitchen would become the beginning of something neither of them had ever expected. Something bigger than promotions.

Bigger than corporate scandals. Bigger than either of their carefully constructed lives. Because sometimes the most important changes don't begin in boardrooms or offices. Sometimes they begin when a tired father hears the truth from the person who loves him most. Jake remained at the sink long after Sophie finished her crackers.

The kitchen was quiet except for the soft ticking of the wall clock and the rain tapping against the window pane. Behind him Laura sat motionless, her coffee growing cold in her hands. Neither of them seemed willing to break the silence that Sophie's innocent words had created. "I wish you weren't tired all the time, Daddy." The sentence kept replaying in Jake's mind.

Not because it was cruel, quite the opposite. It was honest, painfully honest. Sophie had simply described the father she knew, a man who loved her more than anything in the world but who was always exhausted, always rushing, always carrying the weight of survival on his shoulders. After several minutes Jake finally turned around. Sophie was asleep in her chair curled beneath her butterfly blanket with one small hand resting beside an empty cracker plate.

Laura was looking at her with an expression Jake couldn't quite identify. Sadness maybe, or longing, or perhaps regret. "She does that sometimes." Jake said quietly. Laura looked up.

"Falls asleep anywhere." Jake nodded. "Her mother used to call it emergency power down mode." For the first time that night Laura smiled without hesitation. "That's actually pretty accurate."

Jake walked over and carefully lifted Sophie into his arms. She stirred slightly but didn't wake. Her head settled against his shoulder automatically trusting completely that she was safe. Laura watched the movement. Something about it seemed to affect her deeply.
