My name is Spencer, and 5 months into my marriage, I learned that a wedding ring didn't guarantee anything. Bianca and I had been together for 3 years before we got married. We lived in Austin, where I managed commercial properties for a development company. My work wasn't glamorous, but it paid well and required me to stay organized. Bianca worked in event planning for a large hospitality group.

She was outgoing, quick with people, and better at handling chaos than anyone I'd ever met. Our wedding had been 5 months ago. For the first few months, married life felt normal. We had our routines, our arguments, our weekends together. Nothing dramatic.

We talked about buying a larger house eventually and maybe starting a family. Then, Bianca changed. It started with her phone. She had always left it on the kitchen counter while she cooked. Suddenly, it never left her hand.

One night, I reached for it because it was buzzing beside her plate. Bianca grabbed it first. "I've got it. " I looked at her. "You didn't even know who it was. " She locked the screen. "Work. " "At 10:30? " "It's event planning, Spencer.

People don't care what time it is. " I let it go. 2 weeks later, she started coming home late. First, it was a Thursday, then a Saturday, then several evenings in the same week. Every time there was an explanation. A client dinner, a venue problem, a last-minute meeting.

I wasn't interested in interrogating my wife every time she walked through the door, but I noticed patterns. She started dressing differently when she said she was meeting clients. She wore perfume she hadn't used in months. She became protective of her schedule. Then one evening, I asked a simple question.

"Who were you with tonight? " She paused before answering. "People from work. " "Which people? " She looked at me. "Why are you asking? " "Because you're my wife. " Her expression hardened. "Do you not trust me? " I held her eyes. "I haven't said that.

She walked past me without answering. That was the first moment I knew something was wrong. I didn't know what it was yet, but I knew Bianca wasn't telling me everything. And 5 months after our wedding, I wasn't going to ignore it. 3 days later, Bianca told me she had to attend a late dinner with a client.

She left the apartment at 6:40 p.m. Wearing a black dress and the perfume I'd noticed before. "Don't wait up. " she said. "I won't. " She kissed me quickly and left. At 8:15, I received a notification from our joint credit card.

It was a charge from a restaurant called Luna Verde, almost 30 minutes from the venue Bianca had mentioned. I stared at it for a moment. Then, I called her. "Hey. " she answered. "Where are you? " "At the dinner. " "Which restaurant? " There was a pause.

"Why? " "Just asking. " She gave me the name of the place she'd mentioned earlier. It wasn't Luna Verde. I didn't accuse her. I simply said, "Okay. " and ended the call. When she came home around 11:00, I was sitting in the living room.

She stopped when she saw me. "You waited? " "No, I finished what I was doing. " She put her purse down. "How was your night? " "Fine. " I watched her for a second. "How was dinner? " "Good. " "Where did you go? " She hesitated. "Downtown. " I nodded.

"That's interesting. " Her face tightened. "What does that mean? " "The credit card says Luna Verde. " She stared at me. Then, she laughed once. "Seriously? " "Yes. " "One of my coworkers paid for the actual dinner. " "I stopped somewhere afterward. " "With who? " "Why does it matter? " "It matters because you lied about where you were. " She crossed her arms. "I didn't lie. " "You gave me one location.

You were charged at another. " "You're making this bigger than it is. " I stood. "No, I'm asking a simple question. " She looked away. Then, she said something I wasn't Julian was there. The name meant something immediately. Julian Reeves was Bianca's ex.

They had dated for almost 2 years before she met me. I had met him once years earlier at a mutual friend's birthday. Why was your ex having dinner with you? He contacted me about something from the past. What something?

A personal issue. Does he know you're married? Her eyes narrowed. Of course he does. Then why didn't you tell me?
